If you’re a non-drinker, up until recently, your only
choices for a nightcap would be soda, water or some watery pseudo-beer that wasn’t
particularly good. If you wanted a non-alcoholic craft beverage, cranberry juice
and seltzer was as exciting as it got. Luckily, a new batch of booze-free brews
are exploding onto the scene, and it’s never been a better time to be a
non-drinker.
There are a variety of reasons for not drinking alcohol, and 30 percent of Americans fall into this category, whether it’s because of a conscious total sobriety or
calorie-cutting alcohol reduction for health choices. But just because you can’t
or don’t drink doesn’t mean you want to sip plain seltzer all night. Enter the
zero proof booze lifestyle.
The trend, born of FOMO when the rest of the crowd is drinking and you are not, probably started in cocktail
programs at trendy bars (you know, the ones who make bespoke cocktails and
employ mixologists?). The barkeeps listed non-alcoholic bevvies, like shrubs (a combination fruits,
aromatics, vinegar, sugar and soda) and exotic mocktails. As their
popularity in the bars has grown, consumers want to make the good zero proof drinks at home, too.
More brands began popping up, and now there are not only better craft beers and wine than
previously available, but also gin fake-outs, aromatics and other elixirs that
won’t get you buzzed. Many are low in calories, so they’ll fit into your
special diet, plus you can have them on a weeknight and feel the ill effects
the next morning.
Want to make some of these craft mocktails yourself? Check out these brands of non-alcoholic booze and don't feel bad about having another, even if you have to drive.
