When it comes to candy, I am plenty comfortable hanging out on the eating versus making side of things. I don't need to know how the chocolate seamlessly coats the peanut butter of a Reese's cup or what goes on behind the scenes of Sour Patch Kids -- I would just like to enjoy it. That opinion has been wholly affirmed with the internet's latest obsession: a candy cane-making TikTok.
The video, which has amassed nearly 2 million likes since its Dec. 6 posting, details the process behind making cherry candy canes at Hammond's Candies, a confection manufacturer in Denver. The sugar is stretched, sliced and formed to peppermint-coated perfection until (fairly large, if you ask me) candy canes are shipped off to stuff Christmas stockings around the world.
Most people are watching this video mesmerized and/or dumbfounded by the process. I'm erring on the side of dumbfounded, because how the heck do they achieve perfectly-measured stripes of alternating colors from literal sheets of bendy sugar? Let me just eat it and get on with life.
Or, better yet, let's take some finished, packaged candy canes and make something even better out of them: cocktails! Creating a seasonal tipple using candy canes as aspiration is a much better use of our time, I think.
