On social media, somewhere between the fitfluencers' healthy eating tips and Gen Z's cooking nonsense lies baked oats. This latest breakfast craze consists of a scoop of oats blended into a fine powder, mixed up with an egg, baking powder, natural sweeteners, a banana and more and baked in the oven, usually with some chocolate chips sprinkled on top. They're completely customizable; you can add protein powders, different flavorings, extra sweeteners -- anything your brunch palate is craving.
It's not unhealthy, by any means, but let's not get it twisted: This is cake.
Ever heard of oat flour? It's an alternative to all-purpose, wheat flour, popular with the celiac and gluten-free community when cooking up your average baked goods. Oat flour is, indeed, simply ground-up oats. So, I have a hard time getting past the fact that baked oatmeal is anything but a personal-sized cake.
...But this doesn't mean I'm not going to make it every day this week.
