TikTok's latest health kick has everyone adding liquid chlorophyll to their drinks. Does chlorophyll sound familiar, even if you have no idea what I'm talking about? Let's take a moment.
Chlorophyll is the pigment found in plants that makes them green and, in turn, helps them make food. Because it's full of antioxidants and vitamins, chlorophyll is often found in supplements, touting benefits like immune system stimulation, intestine cleansing and energy boosts. It's also thought to play a part in skin health and weight loss support by reducing inflammation. Most of these claims have very little research backing them, but the science is there.
Still, the youths of the internet have taken this stuff and run with it, if not for the supposed skin and gut health benefits, then for the aesthetics.
The doctors and dermatologists of TikTok have had their work cut out for them since this thing exploded, and while they often don't really have anything bad to say about drinking chlorophyll water, they're also cautioning people not to get their hopes up. Plus, chlorophyll could make you sensitive to light, which can end up damaging your skin more in the long run.
The overarching advice from medical professionals on the app? Go get your chlorophyll somewhere else, aka more nutritionally. Dietician Steph Grasso, MS, RD, for example, says to just...eat your greens!
While I can't hate on the fact that this chlorophyll trend is making people drink their water (hydration is the key to everything!), I'm with Dr. Grasso, here. I'd much rather enjoy a satisfying meal chock full of delicious vegetables than stain all my glassware. So, here are TK recipes that go heavy on the veg for your chlorophyll fix.
