If you’ve been on TikTok lately you probably already know
what the drink of the moment is: a "Negroni Sbagliato, with prosecco in it.” In
the now viral clip, two “House of the Dragon” actors profess their favorite
alcoholic beverages and it’s blowing up timelines, For You pages, feeds and the like.
In the clip, Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hightower, and Emma
D’Arcy, who plays Rhaenyra Targaryen, ask each other questions to promote the
HBO series. When Cooke asks D’Arcy about their drink of choice, D’arcy states “a
Negroni,” and then smirks and drawls “Sbagliato...” finally leaning in to add, “with
prosecco in it." The flirty exchange drove viewers wild.
Thanks to a pandemic-era video of Stanley Tucci shaking up Negronis in his kitchen, we’re already familiar with the sweet Italian
cocktail, which is one part Campari, one part gin, and one part sweet red vermouth garnished with an orange. It’s an easy cocktail to make and an impressive thing
to mix up for your friends, though, it’s traditionally stirred, not shaken.
D’Arcy’s fave is a twist on the classic, using the Campari
and the sweet vermouth, but nixing the gin in favor of a top of sweet,
sparkling white Italian wine. It makes the drink bubbly and refreshing.
The name Sbagliato translates to “mistake” in Italian, but
this drink is definitely not a glitch. And, if you’re planning on ordering one
from a bar, you don’t need to add the playful "prosecco" at the end. Ordering a Negroni Sbagliato
will suffice as the prosecco is implied.
Another fun variation is the
Americano, which uses soda instead of gin or prosecco. A Cardinale is like the
original, but with dry vermouth instead of sweet. They are each great cocktails and worth working in to your
cocktail rotation. As Cooke responds in the video, “Stunning.”
If you want to make a Negroni Sbagliato at home, this TikTok should help.
Here’s to making mistakes, especially sweet, strong ones.
