1. Kansas City: Chicken Spiedini
For this dish, Garozza’s Ristorante takes chicken kabobs and breads and then grills them for a very unique spin on a classic food-on-a-stick. Eat
them on the kabob or serve like Garozza’s does, over pasta.
2. Kansas City: Z-Man Sandwich
Oklahoma’s Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que serves this mouth-watering
brisket sandwich that’s topped with barbeque sauce, melted provolone cheese and crispy onion rings on top of a kaiser roll. If you can’t smoke meat, a crockpot
will do too.
3. Kansas City: Burnt Ends
Another brisket specialty, this barbeque mainstay hails from
Arthur
Bryant’s, a famous Kansas City rib joint. Beef brisket is rubbed with
spices, smoked, chopped and smoked again. The dried-out cubes are then
smothered in barbeque sauce and smoked once more. These go great with baked
beans or on a sandwich.
4. Kansas City Stroud’s Cinnamon Rolls
For something sweet, bake up these cinnamon rolls
from Stroud’s Oak Ridge Manor. The chain is known for pan-fried chicken, but it
also features these sugary, fluffy dinner rolls. They’re great as an entrée side but
also work for dessert or breakfast, too.
5. Philadelphia: Cheesesteak
When you think of Philly, you probably think of this classic
sandwich, available all across the city and beyond. It’s a keeper, with thinly
sliced steak, provolone cheese and sautéed peppers, onion and mushrooms.
Serve on a toasted hoagie roll with the condiments of your choice, like mayo or
horseradish.
6. Philadelphia: Soft Pretzels
You can’t go wrong with a big, buttery soft pretzel. Dip in
nacho cheese sauce, mustard or roll the warm pretzels in cinnamon sugar for a
sweeter version.
7. Philadelphia: Tomato Pie
Via Sicily comes Philly’s take on pizza, this square, saucy,
virtually cheeseless version. The crust is thick and chewy like focaccia bread
and the rich tomato sauce really hits the spot.
8. Philadelphia: Water Ice
If you have an ice cream maker, you can whip up a batch of
this Italian-style slush in the flavors and colors of your choosing. How about
some Midnight Green berry for the Eagles?
